On 22–23 September 2026, the Phortify consortium will gather at ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences (Barcelona, Spain) for a two-day event dedicated to strengthening supervision practices and fostering collaboration among early-career researchers.
The programme combines a Supervision and Mentoring Workshop with an Early Career Researchers Day, bringing together Phortify partners, researchers, and supervisors to exchange experiences, develop essential mentoring skills, and build stronger professional networks within the European photonics community.
- Day 1 – Supervision and Mentoring Workshop
The first day will focus on effective supervision of Master’s students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers. Through interactive sessions led by an experienced trainer, participants will explore practical approaches to mentoring, communication, feedback, and supporting researchers throughout their academic journey.
The workshop aims to strengthen supervision practices across the Phortify network while promoting a supportive and inclusive research environment.
- Day 2 – Early Career Researchers Day
The second day will begin with a follow-up session building on the supervision workshop, followed by networking activities designed to connect participants with members of the ICFO research community.
The programme provides an opportunity for young researchers to exchange ideas, expand their professional network, and explore future collaborations across institutions participating in Phortify.
The event will conclude with an informal networking lunch at a local beach restaurant, allowing participants to continue discussions in a relaxed setting.
Who Can Attend?
As part of the Phortify initiative:
- Late-stage PhD student is encouraged to apply for funded participation
- Postdoctoral researcher can be supported by their institution
Additionally, the second day will be open to researchers from the wider BIST community, expanding opportunities for exchange and collaboration.
More Than a Workshop
Beyond the academic program, attendees will experience Barcelona during a vibrant time of the year. The event coincides with La Mercè, one of the city’s most iconic festivals (September 24), offering a unique cultural experience for those who choose to extend their stay.
This workshop reflects Phortify’s commitment to supporting not only technical excellence, but also the human and leadership skills that shape the future of photonics research.
Discover Barcelona
Participants extending their stay will also have the opportunity to experience La Mercè, Barcelona’s largest annual festival, beginning on 23 September. The festival features concerts, cultural performances, fireworks, and celebrations throughout the city.
The Phortify consortium looks forward to welcoming participants to ICFO for two inspiring days of learning, collaboration, and community building, reinforcing our shared commitment to developing the next generation of photonics researchers and educators.
