Phortify Launches Pilot Grants to Boost Inclusion in Photonics

The Phortify project has announced the launch of its Pilot Grants Call, offering undergraduate students from underrepresented genders in STEM a unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge photonics research.

The initiative, titled “Be Part of Phortify,” invites selected participants to join a three-day immersive programme at the ICFO, located near Barcelona. The programme is tentatively scheduled for 6–8 July 2026 and aims to inspire the next generation of photonics researchers while fostering diversity and inclusion in the field.

A Hands-On Introduction to Photonics

Participants will gain direct exposure to frontier research in photonics through a combination of lab experiences, mentoring and networking opportunities. The programme is designed not only to showcase advanced research but also to provide insight into career pathways in deep tech.

Selected students will:

  • Engage with leading researchers in photonics
  • Experience daily life at a world-class research institute
  • Explore career opportunities in deep tech sectors
  • Build connections with peers and professionals across Europe

Programme Highlights

The immersive experience includes:

  • A 3-day on-site visit at ICFO
  • A 1-day lab immersion, where participants work in pairs within a research group
  • A career development session focused on deep tech pathways
  • Networking activities with scientists and fellow students
  • Transferable skills training to support future careers

Who Can Apply?

The call is open to undergraduate students enrolled in STEM programmes who identify as part of underrepresented genders in the field, including women (cis and trans), as well as non-binary and genderqueer individuals.

Applicants must also be nationals of:

  • EU Member States
  • Countries associated with the Digital Europe Programme
  • Countries with cooperation agreements under the programme
